Topic Guidelines

Keeping conversations on topic in a chat environment can be challenging but setting clear expectations and gently reminding participants can be helpful. We have given a number of guidelines that you should keep in mind

  1. Welcome Message: A Moderator will start with a friendly welcome message that sets the tone for the chat environment. Emphasize the purpose of the chat and the topics that are appropriate for discussion. The Torah.

  2. Establish Chat Guidelines: A Moderator would clearly outline the guidelines for the chat, including expectations regarding staying on topic. Let participants know that off-topic discussions may be redirected or moderated to maintain focus.

  3. Encourage Relevant Contributions: You are encouraged to contribute meaningfully to the conversation by staying on topic and providing relevant insights or information. Let them know that their input is valued when it aligns with the chat’s purpose.

  4. Redirect Off-Topic Discussions: When conversations veer off-topic, gently redirect participants back to the main discussion. Politely remind them of the chat’s focus and encourage them to save unrelated topics for another time or platform. Everyone in the chat should stay on point regarding this.

  5. Provide Examples: Offer examples of relevant topics or conversation starters to help guide participants in staying on track. This can help clarify expectations and give participants a better understanding of what is considered on topic.

  6. Everyone should be given a chance: Whatever education level you are at, you should be given the right to have your time to speak in meetings and to post. Do not be afraid to share your thoughts as it relates to the discussion.

  7. Lead by Example: Model behavior by staying on topic yourself and actively participating in relevant discussions. Your example can influence other participants to follow suit and prioritize on-topic contributions.

  8. Encourage Feedback: Encourage participants to provide feedback on the chat format and topics discussed. This can help identify areas for improvement and ensure that the chat remains engaging and relevant to the community.

  9. Acknowledge Contributions: Acknowledge and appreciate contributions that align with the chat’s purpose and topics. Positive reinforcement can encourage participants to continue contributing in a meaningful way.

  10. Be Flexible: While it’s important to maintain focus on the main topics, allow for some flexibility and organic conversation within reasonable bounds. Sometimes, valuable insights or connections can emerge from seemingly off-topic discussions.
